Components of a Diagnostic Set
The most basic parts of a Diagnostic Set are an Ophthalmoscope for examining the eye, an Otoscope for examining the ear, and a Rechargeable Power Handle to power these two.
OPHTHALMOSCOPES
Ophthalmoscopes are used to examine the eye's interior structure to diagnose eye conditions such as retinal detachment or glaucoma. A few important things to look at when choosing an ophthalmoscope are how large a field of view it can provide, the quality of view, and ease of use.
One of the most advanced ophthalmoscopes in the industry is the Welch Allyn PanOptic LED Ophthalmoscope. This patented instrument provides a 20x larger viewing area than a typical ophthalmoscope, uses LED lamps for longer-lasting and more energy-efficient illumination (compared with halogen bulbs), and has Durashock Technology for enhanced durability. The PanOptic LED Ophthalmoscope is an optional ophthalmoscope for the 3.5V Welch Allyn Diagnostic Set.
OTOSCOPES
Much like ophthalmoscopes, otoscopes are evaluated based on the size of the field of view, quality of images, and ease of use. A popular otoscope in recent years is the Welch Allyn 3.5V Macroview LED Otoscope. This otoscope provides a 3x larger field of view than a single-lens otoscope and a 5x magnification feature for clearer visualization of the ear canal and eardrum. The game-changing feature of this otoscope is the ability to digitally connect to an iPhone device and the iExaminer app, allowing clinicians to digitally view, capture, and send clinical images to patients and other medical practitioners.
RECHARGEABLE POWER HANDLERS
Diagnostic sets also include a Rechargeable Power Handle that is compatible with the included otoscope and ophthalmoscope heads. Rechargeable power handles use 3 kinds of batteries: Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), and Lithium Ion (Li-ion). NiMH and Li-ion are longer-lasting than NiCad in most cases, which is why NiCad-powered diagnostic handles are more affordable.
