Neurology reflex hammers, also called neurological or percussion hammers, are a necessary tool for medical professionals to use when assessing a patient’s nervous system health. It is used by softly striking a patient's nerves and muscles, usually at the knee, to test how their neurological system reacts to the tap. Another use for reflex hammers is for a surgeon to relax a patient’s muscles and joints during surgery by tapping gently on them. There are various kinds of neurological hammers, and each one has its own characteristics and features that make it unique.
The most popular and well-known hammer in the United States, and the one that is seen most often in physicians’ offices and clinics, is the Taylor Neurological Hammer, which has a triangular rubber head and a metal handle. The ADC Taylor Hammer features a chrome handle and a synthetic rubber head and has a length of 7 ½” which is the perfect length for comfortable control of the instrument. Other varieties include the ADC Buck Hammer which features a brush and needle concealed inside for optimal convenience and the ADC Babinksi Adjustable Hammer which has a head that can be used either horizontally or vertically and has a telescoping handle for control of its length.
