The BD Taxo P Discs are used for the rapid presumptive identification of pneumococci. Each of the 50 discs is 6mm in diameter and is impregnated with ethylhydrocupreine hydrochloride (optochin), a pneumonia therapy drug used before sulfonamides became available. The growth of pneumococci, but not of other streptococci, is distinctly inhibited by this chemical. To presumptively identify pneumococci, a Taxo P disc is placed on a blood agar plate inoculated with a pure culture suspected to be Streptococcus pneumoniae. If a zone of inhibition forms around the Taxo P disc, the organism is presumptively pneumococci.
